Questions in Presentations Causing a Fear of Public Speaking?

2 min read

The single most scary part of any presentation according to my many clients is when it comes to taking audience questions. This is the part they blame for causing a fear of public speaking.

Fear of Public Speaking

Let me ask you a question...

Do you remember a time when you were suddenly put on the spot and had to answer a question?

Can be stressful and scary, right?

Imagine being able to deliver a confident answer to any question when you’re put on the spot, in say a meeting or presentation.

Wouldn’t that be amazing?

Read on to see how.

When we're asked a question in a business setting, it's best if your answer takes the form of a mini-presentation with a clear structure throughout.

The first step is to listen to the questioner carefully.

It's so easy to jump in when we've heard just part of the question, assuming we know what we are being asked. Listen to the full question and then pause.

Pausing for a few seconds gives us the opportunity to gather our thoughts. Should anyone notice the pause, it will be assumed we're preparing a considered answer.

Now follow the clear, simple P.R.E.P (Point, Reason Example, Point) structure.

When you follow this structure, you'll find that all your unplanned speeches are clear, logical and structured.

With the PREP structure, you start off by stating your:-

Point – Your opinion or belief in response to the question you've just been asked.

Reason – Follow this by giving the reason for your point of view.

Example – Provide an example that supports your reason and main point.

Point – Finally conclude by summarising your main point and transitioning back to the person who asked the question.

P.R.E.P is an effective formula to follow whenever you have to answer a question.

As you practice and use this simple, yet very useful structure, you’ll appear and feel far more confident

Give it a go and let me know how you get on.
